Little Egret Fishing at Warnham Local Nature Reserve

Welcome to my wildlife photography journal! On 2 August 2026, I spent some time at Warnham Local Nature Reserve photographing a Little Egret as it went about the business of fishing. It was a lovely opportunity to watch one of these elegant little herons at close quarters and capture some of its behaviour as it worked its way through the shallows.

The Little Egret was actively fishing, carefully stalking its prey through the water before suddenly making a quick strike. It was fascinating to watch the way it moved, constantly searching and adjusting its position as it looked for its next meal. Little Egrets can be surprisingly active when fishing, which provided plenty of opportunities to photograph the different stages of the hunt.

For me, this is one of the things that makes photographing wildlife so enjoyable. You never quite know when the next strike is going to happen. One moment the bird can be standing quietly in the water, and the next it is suddenly moving with incredible speed. Trying to anticipate that moment and be ready to capture the action makes for an enjoyable photographic challenge.

Warnham Local Nature Reserve continues to provide plenty of opportunities to photograph a wide variety of wildlife, and this session with the Little Egret was another great example. Sometimes it is simply a case of finding a subject, settling in and waiting to see what happens.
