Kingfisher in Flight at Warnham Local Nature Reserve

Welcome to my wildlife photography journal! On 1 August 2026, I spent some time at Warnham Local Nature Reserve photographing one of my favourite subjects — the Kingfisher. There is always something special about watching these colourful birds going about their daily routine, and when one appears with a fish, the opportunity to capture the action becomes even more exciting.

This particular Kingfisher was flying incredibly low and fast, just above the surface of the water, with a fish held firmly in its bill. Everything happened in a split second as it sped across the water, making it a real challenge to keep the bird in the frame and maintain focus while also trying to capture the fish and the water together.

The speed of a Kingfisher at water level is something else. They can move so quickly that there is very little time to react, which makes successfully freezing a moment like this all the more rewarding. Capturing the bird in flight with its catch, surrounded by the movement and reflections of the water, helps tell the story of what was happening rather than simply recording a perched bird.

It was another great encounter at Warnham Local Nature Reserve and a reminder of why I never get tired of photographing Kingfishers. You can spend a long time waiting for the right opportunity, but when everything comes together in that split second, the patience is definitely worthwhile.
