Little Grebe Among the Reeds at Warnham Local Nature Reserve

Welcome to my wildlife photography journal! A visit to Warnham Local Nature Reserve on 1st August 2026 provided one of those peaceful wildlife photography moments where the surroundings were just as important as the subject. With calm conditions and reflective water, it was a perfect opportunity to slow down and take in the quieter side of the reserve.

I spent some time photographing a Little Grebe as it moved quietly among the reeds. These small waterbirds can be easy to overlook, but when you take the time to watch them, there is plenty to appreciate. On this occasion, the calm water created a lovely backdrop, with the grebe surrounded by reeds and its reflection stretching across the surface.

The combination of the soft reflections, the still water and the natural surroundings helped create a much more relaxed image. Rather than photographing a bird in action, this was all about capturing the atmosphere of the moment and showing the Little Grebe within its habitat. Sometimes the simplest wildlife encounters can produce some of the most enjoyable photographs.

It was another enjoyable session at Warnham Local Nature Reserve, with plenty of opportunities to slow down and appreciate the smaller details that can easily be missed when you're concentrating on the larger wildlife. These quieter moments are a reminder that wildlife photography isn't always about action — sometimes it's simply about being there, watching and waiting for everything to come together.
