Kingfisher in Action at Warnham Local Nature Reserve

Welcome to my wildlife photography journal! Warnham Local Nature Reserve is always capable of producing some fantastic wildlife moments, and on 22nd August 2026 I spent some time watching and photographing a Kingfisher as it prepared to hunt.

Watching a Kingfisher getting ready to dive is fascinating in itself. Sitting patiently on its perch, it can look completely relaxed, but then everything changes in an instant. The moment it launches from the perch, it turns into what looks like a little blue bullet, heading straight towards the water with incredible speed and precision.

The dive happens incredibly quickly. One moment the Kingfisher is sitting quietly, and the next it has launched itself into the air and is disappearing beneath the surface. Capturing that sequence is always a real challenge, as there is very little time to react once the dive begins.

On this occasion, I was lucky enough to capture the sequence as the Kingfisher hit the water and then resurfaced with a tadpole in its beak. Seeing the whole sequence unfold was fantastic, but being able to capture those individual moments in photographs made the encounter even more rewarding.

It’s moments like this that make spending time watching and photographing wildlife so worthwhile. You never quite know what is going to happen next, but when you’re ready, paying attention, and everything comes together, you can capture a little piece of the action that would otherwise be over in the blink of an eye.
