Kingfisher Shaking a Fish at Warnham Local Nature Reserve

Welcome to my wildlife photography journal! Warnham Local Nature Reserve is always a rewarding place to spend time with a camera, and on 22nd August 2026 I was fortunate enough to have another memorable encounter with one of the reserve’s Kingfishers.

I was photographing a Kingfisher as it returned to its perch carrying a fish. What caught my attention was what happened next. Once back on the perch, the Kingfisher began vigorously shaking the fish, carefully positioning it before swallowing it. Watching the process unfold was fascinating, and it gave me several opportunities to capture the action as the bird worked out exactly how to handle its meal.

Kingfishers are such a joy to photograph, but they certainly keep you on your toes. Their movements can be incredibly quick, and you need to be ready for those brief moments when something interesting happens. Capturing the movement as the Kingfisher shook the fish made this particular sequence especially enjoyable, as it showed a little more of the behaviour that you don't always get to see.

These are the encounters that make spending time at Warnham Local Nature Reserve so rewarding. You never quite know what is going to happen when you are watching a Kingfisher, and being ready when that moment arrives can result in some great photographic opportunities.
