Kingfisher Launching from Its Perch at Warnham Local Nature Reserve

Welcome to my wildlife photography journal! Warnham Local Nature Reserve is one of my favourite places to photograph wildlife, and a visit on 22nd August 2026 gave me another fantastic opportunity to photograph one of my favourite subjects — a Kingfisher preparing to launch from its perch.

Rather than capturing just a single moment, I managed to photograph several launches, giving me the opportunity to show the sequence as the Kingfisher pushed away from the perch and headed towards the water. Seeing the individual stages of the movement really brings the action to life, from that first instant of take-off to the moment the bird accelerates towards the water.

Photographing a Kingfisher launching is a real test of timing and concentration. These moments happen incredibly quickly, so it’s all about being ready, keeping the bird in the frame and reacting to the movement as it happens. Because this Kingfisher was launching from the same perch, I had a good idea of where the action was likely to begin, which certainly helped. Even so, there was still no guarantee that I would manage to capture the complete sequence.

That unpredictability is one of the things I particularly enjoy about photographing Kingfishers. They can look completely relaxed one moment, sitting quietly on their perch and surveying the water, and then suddenly they’re gone. You have to be ready for that instant when everything changes.

Capturing a sequence like this is especially rewarding because it shows more than just a single photograph. It gives a glimpse into the speed and movement of the Kingfisher as it launches into action, and those are the moments that make the patience and preparation behind wildlife photography worthwhile.
