Kingfisher Photography at Warnham Local Nature Reserve

Welcome to my wildlife photography journal! Warnham Local Nature Reserve is one of my favourite places to photograph Kingfishers, and on 22nd August 2026 I spent some time watching and photographing these beautiful birds around the water. It was one of those sessions where you never quite know what moment is going to happen next.

During the morning, I managed to capture a mixture of different Kingfisher moments. Some images showed them perched quietly, taking in their surroundings and watching the water below. Others captured those fascinating moments just before a dive, when the bird suddenly becomes focused on what is happening beneath the surface.

The pre-dive moments are always particularly interesting to photograph. A Kingfisher can sit perfectly still for several seconds before suddenly launching itself from the perch and disappearing into the water. Everything happens incredibly quickly, so being ready and keeping the bird in the frame is a real test of timing and concentration.

Then, if you're lucky, there is another opportunity as the Kingfisher returns to its perch after the dive. These moments can be just as rewarding to capture, whether the bird comes back empty-billed or has successfully caught a fish.

Rather than being one particular sequence, this session was a collection of different moments, each showing a slightly different part of the Kingfisher's behaviour. From quiet observation to the anticipation of a dive and the return to the perch, each image tells a small part of the story.

Another enjoyable morning spent photographing one of my favourite birds at Warnham Local Nature Reserve — and another reminder that sometimes the best wildlife photography comes from simply being there, watching, and waiting for whatever happens next.
