Little Egret Catches a Large Carp at Warnham Local Nature Reserve

Welcome to my wildlife photography journal! Warnham Local Nature Reserve is always capable of producing unexpected wildlife encounters, and my visit on 22nd August 2026 was a perfect example. I had gone out to photograph a Little Egret, expecting to capture some typical fishing behaviour, but I certainly wasn't expecting it to catch a carp quite this size!

The Little Egret had been fishing in the shallows when it suddenly struck, grabbing hold of what turned out to be a surprisingly large carp. What followed was a fascinating struggle as the Egret tried to work out exactly how it was going to swallow such a substantial fish. It repeatedly adjusted its grip and position, seemingly trying to find the best way to tackle its rather impressive catch.

Watching the whole encounter unfold was fantastic, and it provided some great photographic opportunities as the Little Egret battled to keep hold of the carp. It was one of those situations where the behaviour was just as interesting as the photographs themselves, with every moment bringing something different.

Wildlife photography is brilliant for moments like this. You can arrive with one subject in mind, but nature has a habit of completely changing the plan. You never quite know what is going to happen next, and that unpredictability is one of the things I enjoy most about spending time out with my camera.
