Moorhen Taking Off at Warnham Local Nature Reserve

Welcome to my wildlife photography journal! Warnham Local Nature Reserve is one of those places where you never quite know what might happen in front of the camera. On 22nd August 2026, I was spending time photographing the wildlife when a familiar Moorhen suddenly decided it was time to take off.

I hadn't specifically been waiting for the Moorhen to fly, but when the opportunity presented itself, I was ready to react and fire off a sequence as it lifted from the water. These unexpected moments are often some of the most rewarding in wildlife photography because there is no time to plan the shot — you simply have to recognise what is happening and respond.

Moorhens are commonly seen walking around the edges of the ponds or feeding among the vegetation, so catching one actually taking off gives a very different view of this familiar bird. The movement happens incredibly quickly, making it a real test of timing and reaction. Being ready for that split-second decision to fly was all that was needed to turn an ordinary moment into a sequence of photographs.

This was another one of those photographs that came about purely by chance. I wasn't waiting for anything particular to happen; I was simply watching and photographing what was in front of me. That's one of the things I enjoy most about wildlife photography — sometimes the best opportunities appear when you least expect them.
