Little Egret Fishing at Warnham Local Nature Reserve

Welcome to my wildlife photography journal! A visit to Warnham Local Nature Reserve on 26th July 2026 gave me the opportunity to spend some time photographing Little Egrets as they went about one of their favourite activities — fishing. With their bright white plumage and delicate movements, they are always rewarding birds to photograph, but watching their behaviour closely can reveal some fascinating moments.

One behaviour that particularly caught my attention was the way the Little Egrets tossed fish between their beaks after catching them. Rather than swallowing the fish immediately, they appeared to adjust and reposition their catch, carefully working it into just the right position before swallowing. It was fascinating to watch this process unfold and made for some great photographic opportunities, particularly when the fish was clearly visible between the bird's beaks.

These small moments are exactly what makes spending time watching wildlife so rewarding. It's easy to concentrate on simply finding and photographing a bird, but taking the time to observe what happens afterwards can reveal interesting behaviours that might otherwise be missed. The Little Egret's careful handling of its catch provided a perfect example of this.

Another enjoyable session at Warnham Local Nature Reserve, capturing not just the bird itself but one of those fascinating little behaviours that can so easily be missed if you aren't watching closely. For me, these are often the moments that turn a good wildlife photography session into a memorable one.
