Little Egret Having a Good Shake at Warnham Local Nature Reserve

Welcome to my wildlife photography journal! A visit to Warnham Local Nature Reserve on 2nd August 2026 gave me the opportunity to photograph a Little Egret in one of those brief moments of behaviour that can so easily be missed. Although Little Egrets are often photographed standing quietly in the shallows or patiently fishing, there is plenty of character to be found when they start moving.

This particular egret suddenly began having a good shake, creating some lovely movement through its feathers. It only lasted for a few moments, but it was enough to capture some interesting images as the bird shook itself off. I particularly liked the detail in the wings and the way the individual feathers spread out during the movement.

Photographing moments like this is always rewarding because they are very different from the more traditional portraits of a bird standing still. The movement gives the image a little more energy and helps to show the character of the subject. It also highlights just how much detail there is in the plumage when you manage to freeze the action at the right moment.

Little Egrets are such elegant birds when they are standing still, but encounters like this are a reminder that there is much more to photographing them than simply capturing a perfectly posed portrait. Sometimes it is those unexpected few seconds of behaviour that produce the most interesting photographs.

Another enjoyable encounter with the wildlife at Warnham Local Nature Reserve, and another reminder that there is always something worth watching when you take the time to look closely.
