Little Egret in Flight at Warnham Local Nature Reserve

Welcome to my wildlife photography journal! Every visit to Warnham Local Nature Reserve offers something different, and on 18th July 2026 I spent time photographing one of the reserve's most elegant and recognisable wetland birds—the Little Egret. Whether feeding quietly along the water's edge or gliding effortlessly overhead, they're always a pleasure to watch and photograph.

Although Little Egrets are often seen standing patiently in shallow water, waiting for the perfect moment to strike at fish or other aquatic prey, seeing them take to the air is equally rewarding. Their brilliant white plumage stands out beautifully against the greens and browns of the reserve, while their contrasting black legs and broad, graceful wings make them an outstanding subject for wildlife photography.

Capturing birds in flight is never easy, and that's part of what makes it so enjoyable. Every flypast presents a new challenge, with constantly changing wing positions, lighting, backgrounds and angles. Timing is everything, and it's always satisfying when the autofocus locks on and everything comes together to freeze a split second of such effortless flight.

Warnham Local Nature Reserve continues to be one of my favourite places to photograph wildlife throughout the seasons. From resident birds to visiting migrants, every trip offers new photographic opportunities, and the Little Egret is always a species I'm pleased to encounter. Its elegance, patience and graceful flight make it one of the reserve's true highlights.
