Kingfisher Fishing Sequence at Warnham Local Nature Reserve

Welcome to my wildlife photography journal! Warnham Local Nature Reserve is one of my favourite locations for capturing British wildlife, and it always offers the chance to witness fascinating behaviour from some of our most iconic species. On 18th July 2026, I spent some time watching one of the reserve’s most recognisable birds — the Kingfisher.

Although the bird was working the far side of the lake, it still provided a fantastic opportunity to capture the complete fishing sequence. Watching the process unfold was a real privilege, from the brief moment of hovering above the water as it searched for the perfect opportunity, to the rapid dive beneath the surface, followed by the successful return with a fish firmly held in its bill.

Kingfishers are incredibly skilled hunters, and seeing this behaviour first-hand is always a reminder of the patience, precision, and speed required to survive. Even at a distance, being able to photograph the full sequence was incredibly rewarding and showed that great wildlife moments can happen anywhere when you take the time to observe.

Warnham Local Nature Reserve continues to be a wonderful place for wildlife photography, offering unforgettable encounters and the chance to capture the natural behaviours that make these species so special.
