Male and Female Redpoll at Warnham Local Nature Reserve

Welcome to my wildlife photography journal! Warnham Local Nature Reserve is always full of surprises, and each visit brings the chance to discover something special. During my visit on 8th March 2026, I was lucky enough to spend some time with a pair of Redpolls, capturing both the male and female as they moved through the reserve.

The male Redpoll was particularly striking, with his distinctive red crown and beautiful soft pink wash across the chest. In contrast, the female displayed a more subtle beauty, with delicate streaking and softer tones that help distinguish her from the brighter colours of the male. Seeing both together provided a wonderful opportunity to observe the differences between the two and appreciate the unique features of each bird.

They spent time feeding quietly, offering just enough opportunity to capture a few photographs before moving on. Encounters like this are always rewarding, especially when a less common visitor appears and gives you the chance to study their behaviour in a natural setting.

Warnham Local Nature Reserve continues to be one of my favourite locations for wildlife photography, offering a fantastic variety of species throughout the year. It’s moments like these that make every visit worthwhile and remind me why patience and time spent in the field are so important.
