Spring Signs at Warnham Local Nature Reserve – Egyptian Goose, Long-Tailed Tit, Mallard and Wren

Welcome to my wildlife photography journal! Warnham Local Nature Reserve is a place I return to time and time again, and every visit brings new opportunities to witness the changing seasons and the wildlife that calls this special reserve home. My visit on 7th March 2026 was full of activity, with several memorable moments captured during the day.

One of the highlights was watching an Egyptian Goose powering through the air in flight. These striking birds always make an impressive sight, and capturing them at the perfect moment as they take to the sky is always rewarding. Their size, speed, and distinctive markings make them a fantastic subject for wildlife photography.

Moving through the branches, a Long-Tailed Tit provided another challenge. These tiny birds are constantly on the move, rarely staying still for more than a few seconds as they search for food. Capturing a clear image of one requires patience, timing, and a little bit of luck — but that’s part of what makes photographing them so enjoyable.

The water offered a chance to photograph a male Mallard Duck displaying its unmistakable colours. With their vibrant green heads and detailed plumage, Mallards are familiar birds, but taking the time to appreciate their beauty reminds us that even the most common species can make wonderful photographic subjects.

Another special moment came from watching a Wren busy carrying a leaf, a clear sign that spring was beginning to arrive and nesting activity was getting underway. Seeing these small birds preparing for the breeding season is always a rewarding reminder of the changes happening around us in nature.

Warnham Local Nature Reserve continues to provide something different with every visit. Whether it’s a familiar species showing new behaviour or an unexpected photographic opportunity, it’s these small moments that keep bringing me back and make every trip worthwhile.
