Northern Lapwing Defending Its Territory at Farlington Marshes

Welcome to my wildlife photography journal! Every visit to Farlington Marshes offers the chance to witness something different, and on the 5th of April 2026 I was fortunate enough to observe one of nature's most dramatic encounters. Spring is a wonderful time to visit the reserve, as many birds are establishing territories and preparing to raise their young.

While watching the wildlife, I was lucky enough to photograph a Northern Lapwing fiercely chasing away a Magpie. Lapwings are renowned for their determination during the breeding season, becoming highly defensive of their nesting areas and showing little hesitation in confronting much larger birds. It was fascinating to watch the speed, agility, and persistence of the Lapwing as it repeatedly drove the Magpie away, ensuring the potential threat stayed well clear of its territory.

Moments like this are a reminder that wildlife photography isn't just about capturing beautiful portraits. Some of the most memorable images come from documenting natural behaviour and the constant struggle for survival that takes place every day. Witnessing this display of courage and determination made for an unforgettable experience and highlighted just how much drama unfolds across the marshes during the breeding season.
