Oystercatchers in Flight at Pagham Harbour

Welcome to my wildlife photography journal! Every visit to Pagham Harbour offers something different, and on 6th April 2026 I was treated to a wonderful spring encounter with one of Britain's most recognisable coastal birds. With clear skies and plenty of activity around the harbour, it was the perfect opportunity to spend time photographing the local wildlife.

One of the highlights of the visit was watching a group of Oystercatchers flying past. Their bold black and white plumage, bright orange bills, and distinctive calls make them impossible to miss as they travel along the shoreline. Seeing them in flight really showcases their elegance, with their long wings carrying them effortlessly across the harbour as they move between feeding and roosting areas.

Photographing birds in flight is always an enjoyable challenge, requiring quick reactions and careful timing to capture the perfect moment. The contrast between the Oystercatchers and the spring sky made for some striking images, highlighting both the beauty and energy of these iconic coastal birds. Moments like these are what make wildlife photography so rewarding, combining patience, observation, and a little bit of good fortune.

Pagham Harbour continues to be one of my favourite places to photograph wildlife throughout the year. Whether it's waders, wildfowl, or birds of prey, every visit offers something unique, and this memorable encounter with the Oystercatchers was another reminder of why this reserve is such a fantastic destination for nature lovers and photographers alike.
