Ruddy Turnstone at Pagham Harbour – A Coastal Character

Welcome to my wildlife photography journal! Every visit to Pagham Harbour offers something different, and its mix of mudflats, shingle, and tidal channels makes it one of the South Coast's finest locations for coastal bird photography. On the 6th of April 2026, I spent time photographing one of my favourite wading birds – the ever-busy Ruddy Turnstone.

During my visit, I was delighted to photograph this characterful little wader as it searched the shoreline for food. Ruddy Turnstones are wonderfully energetic birds, constantly on the move as they live up to their name by turning over stones, shells, and seaweed with their slightly upturned bills in search of insects, crustaceans, and other small invertebrates. They're fascinating to watch, rarely staying still for long, and their determination makes them an enjoyable subject for wildlife photography.

At this time of year, their striking breeding plumage is beginning to emerge, with rich chestnut tones, bold black markings, and crisp white patches creating one of the most attractive patterns among our coastal waders. Combined with their inquisitive nature and constant activity, they provide endless photographic opportunities for anyone willing to spend a little time observing their behaviour.

It was a real pleasure to spend time with this beautiful coastal bird and capture a series of images of it in its natural habitat. Encounters like these are a reminder of why I enjoy visiting places like Pagham Harbour, where every outing offers the chance to appreciate the remarkable wildlife that thrives along our coastline.
