Photographing an Emperor Dragonfly at Warnham Local Nature Reserve

Welcome to my wildlife photography journal! Summer is one of the best times to visit Warnham Local Nature Reserve, with ponds and wetlands buzzing with life. On the 18th of July 2026, I spent some time focusing on one of Britain's most impressive insects—the Emperor Dragonfly, a species that never fails to capture my attention.

The Emperor Dragonfly is the largest dragonfly regularly seen in the UK and is an incredible aerial predator. Watching one patrol its territory is fascinating, as it repeatedly flies back and forth over open water, constantly searching for insects to catch. Their speed, agility and seemingly endless energy make them one of the most exciting subjects for wildlife photography.

Photographing an Emperor Dragonfly in flight is never easy. They rarely stay still for more than a moment, and their unpredictable movements demand patience, quick reactions and a good understanding of their behaviour. By observing their regular patrol routes, it's possible to anticipate where they are likely to fly next, increasing the chances of capturing that perfect image as they power through the summer air.

Warnham Local Nature Reserve continues to provide fantastic opportunities to observe and photograph dragonflies throughout the warmer months. Spending time with these remarkable insects is always rewarding, and every successful image is a reminder of just how impressive they are both in flight and at rest.
