A Memorable Summer Day at Warnham Local Nature Reserve

Welcome to my wildlife photography journal! Every visit to Warnham Local Nature Reserve offers something different, and that's one of the reasons I enjoy returning throughout the year. My visit on the 18th of July 2026 was a perfect example, with a wonderful variety of birds, insects, and mammals providing photographic opportunities from start to finish.

One of the day's most exciting moments unfolded over the lake when a Black-headed Gull spotted another gull carrying a freshly caught fish. What followed was a fast-paced aerial chase, with the pursuing gull hoping to steal an easy meal before the successful hunter had a chance to swallow its prize. These brief interactions are a fascinating reminder of the constant competition that takes place among wildlife and always make for entertaining photography.

Nearby, a Great Crested Grebe surfaced after a dive before vigorously shaking the water from its feathers. The explosion of water droplets lasted only a fraction of a second, but freezing that moment in a photograph perfectly captured the energy and character of this elegant waterbird.

The reserve's insect life was equally rewarding throughout the day. A Honey Bee provided a challenge as it flew between flowers collecting nectar, while a Phasia hemiptera fly hovered just long enough for a series of photographs before disappearing. A Red-tailed Bumblebee lifting off from a thistle created another memorable moment, its wings becoming a blur as it launched into flight.

The birds continued to provide plenty of variety. A handsome male Tufted Duck drifted peacefully across the lake, while a White Dove emerged gracefully from the water after bathing. A Wood Pigeon posed beautifully in the summer surroundings, and one of the more unusual compositions came from a Mute Swan, with only its elegant head and neck visible above the lakeside vegetation, creating a simple yet striking image.

Just when I thought the day was coming to an end, Warnham had one final surprise in store. As the reserve prepared to close, a Roe Deer quietly emerged at the edge of the lake. Remaining calm and alert, it paused long enough for a few photographs before disappearing once again into the surrounding vegetation. It was the perfect ending to another memorable day, proving that patience often brings the greatest rewards in wildlife photography.
