Photographing Large White Butterflies in Flight at Warnham Local Nature Reserve

Welcome to my wildlife photography journal! Every visit to Warnham Local Nature Reserve offers something different, and one of the great joys of summer is spending time with the abundance of butterflies that fill the meadows and wildflower areas. On the 18th of July 2026, I set myself the challenge of photographing one of our most familiar species in a way that truly showcased its beauty and agility.

One of the highlights of the day was photographing Large White butterflies in flight. Although they are a common sight throughout the summer, capturing them airborne is far from easy. Their erratic flight, sudden changes in direction, and habit of never settling for long make them one of the more challenging butterfly species to photograph.

Rather than waiting for them to land, I focused on freezing their movement as they travelled between patches of wildflowers. It took plenty of patience, careful observation, and more than a few missed opportunities before everything came together. When the timing, focus, and light finally aligned, I was rewarded with several images that captured both the elegance and energy of these beautiful insects as they drifted effortlessly across the reserve.

Wildlife photography often reminds us that success rarely comes instantly. The best photographs usually come after spending time understanding your subject's behaviour and being prepared to wait for the right moment. It's those small victories that make the experience so enjoyable, especially when photographing fast-moving wildlife.

Warnham Local Nature Reserve continues to provide fantastic opportunities to observe and photograph wildlife throughout the summer months. Whether it's birds, insects, mammals, or wildflowers, every visit offers something different, making it one of my favourite places to return to throughout the year.
