Skylark Catching Flies Over the Meadow – RSPB Pulborough Brooks

Welcome to my wildlife photography journal! RSPB Pulborough Brooks is a wonderful location for experiencing the changing seasons and the incredible wildlife that thrives across its varied habitats. On 28th June 2026, I spent a fantastic evening exploring the reserve, watching and photographing Skylarks as they hunted over the meadow.

These remarkable little birds are often heard long before they are seen, filling the summer skies with their beautiful and unmistakable song. Watching a Skylark rise into the air during its display flight is always a special sight, but seeing it suddenly drop down to catch insects on the wing was a real privilege to witness. Capturing these moments was a rewarding challenge, as their movements are quick and unpredictable.

The meadow was full of life, with the open grassland providing the perfect environment for Skylarks to feed and raise their young. Encounters like this highlight just how important these habitats are for supporting some of our most treasured farmland birds, and why places such as RSPB Pulborough Brooks play such a vital role in protecting wildlife.

It was a rewarding evening spent enjoying one of the UK’s most iconic birds in a beautiful setting. Moments like these are exactly why time spent in the field with a camera is always worthwhile.
