Spring Wildlife Highlights at Woods Mill Nature Reserve – Dragonflies, Nightingales and Wetland Life

Welcome to my wildlife photography journal! Woods Mill Nature Reserve is a fantastic location to experience the variety of wildlife that thrives throughout the spring months. On 9th May 2026, I spent some time exploring the reserve, and the day delivered a wonderful mix of insects, birds, and wetland species, making it a memorable visit for photography.

The reserve was full of activity, with both male and female Broad-Bodied Chasers providing excellent opportunities as they patrolled the ponds and regularly returned to favoured perches in the sunshine. These impressive dragonflies are always fascinating to watch, with their powerful flight and striking appearance making them a rewarding subject to photograph. Around the water’s edge, Large Red Damselflies added flashes of colour as they moved among the vegetation.

The insect life continued with the welcome appearance of a striking Cardinal Beetle, a beautiful splash of red among the greenery. Moments like these highlight just how much smaller wildlife can add to the experience of exploring nature reserves, with every patch of vegetation offering the possibility of a new discovery.

The birdlife at Woods Mill was equally impressive, with Chiffchaffs and Common Whitethroats singing from the surrounding vegetation. One of the real highlights of the day was hearing and photographing a Common Nightingale — a truly special species to encounter and one that makes any visit feel memorable. Their powerful song is one of the unmistakable sounds of spring, and seeing one as well as hearing it was a fantastic experience.

The wetlands were alive with activity, with Reed Warblers calling from deep within the reeds and a young Mallard duckling providing a charming moment as it confidently explored the water. These small encounters are often what make wildlife photography so rewarding, capturing not just individual species but the character and atmosphere of a place.

Woods Mill Nature Reserve continues to be a wonderful location for wildlife photography, offering an incredible variety of birds, insects, and wetland species throughout the spring season. Every visit brings new opportunities and reminders of the rich biodiversity found in these important habitats.
