Swallows in Flight at RSPB Pulborough Brooks – A Golden Summer Backdrop

Welcome to my wildlife photography journal! On 22nd August 2026, I spent some time at RSPB Pulborough Brooks photographing Swallows in flight, with the dry golden grass of the summer fields providing a beautiful natural backdrop. It was one of those late-summer scenes where the warm colours of the landscape added something extra to the experience.

Swallows are always a challenge to photograph in flight. They move incredibly quickly, constantly changing direction and altitude as they hunt for insects, making it difficult to keep them in the frame and maintain focus. Capturing a sharp image takes plenty of patience, quick reactions, and, if I'm honest, a fair bit of luck as well.

What I particularly liked about this session was the contrast between the dark Swallows and the warm golden tones of the dry grass. Rather than photographing them against the usual blue or cloudy sky, the background gave the images a completely different feel. The combination of the birds in flight and the dry summer landscape really captured the atmosphere of late August at Pulborough Brooks.

It's always rewarding when the conditions and the behaviour of the wildlife come together to create something a little different. These images aren't just about capturing Swallows in flight; they also reflect the character of the landscape and the changing seasons at one of my favourite wildlife photography locations.
