Two Kingfishers at Warnham Local Nature Reserve – A Close Encounter

Welcome to my wildlife photography journal! Warnham Local Nature Reserve is a place where I’ve had many memorable wildlife encounters, but sometimes the most exciting moments are the ones you simply cannot predict. On 22nd August 2026, I was treated to a fantastic encounter with not one, but two Kingfishers.

The two birds were chasing each other around the water, darting back and forth at incredible speed and flying surprisingly close to where I was standing. Everything happened so quickly that there was very little time to think about composition or settings. It was simply a case of keeping the camera ready, following the action and hoping to capture the moment as it unfolded.

Watching two Kingfishers interacting at such close range was a real privilege. Their flashes of blue as they raced across the water made for an incredible spectacle, while their speed and unpredictable movements provided a real challenge to photograph. It was one of those situations where being prepared and reacting quickly mattered far more than having time to carefully plan each image.

Encounters like this are one of the things I enjoy most about wildlife photography. You can spend hours waiting for something to happen, only for the action to suddenly appear right in front of you. When the birds come to you and provide an opportunity like this, all you can do is enjoy the moment and try to capture as much of it as possible.
