Wildlife Encounters at Ifield Mill Pond – Birds, Behaviour and a Basking Turtle

Welcome to my wildlife photography journal! Every visit to Ifield Mill Pond offers something different, and that's one of the reasons I enjoy returning throughout the year. On the 18th of April 2026, the pond was full of activity, providing a wonderful mix of bird behaviour, reflections, action, and even an unexpected reptile basking in the spring sunshine.

One of the first subjects to catch my attention was a Carrion Crow, which posed beautifully for a series of close portraits. Often overlooked because they are so common, Carrion Crows are incredibly intelligent birds with striking features when viewed up close. The soft morning light highlighted the detail in its glossy black plumage and gave the photographs a real sense of character.

The male Mallards were particularly active throughout the session. Some drifted quietly across the calm water, creating perfect reflections, while others took to the air, providing opportunities to capture them in flight. I also watched several birds preening while perched on a partially submerged log, offering a completely different perspective and showcasing the quieter side of their daily behaviour. It was a great reminder of how much variety can be found by simply observing familiar species for a little longer.

Elsewhere around the pond, Common Moorhens brought plenty of excitement as they chased one another around the water's edge. Their sudden bursts of speed and energetic interactions added a real sense of movement to the morning and created some enjoyable action photography opportunities.

Adding an unexpected twist to the visit was a Red-eared Slider Turtle, which had climbed onto a sunny spot to bask. Completely motionless, it provided a striking contrast to the constant activity of the birds around it. Watching such different species sharing the same habitat highlights the diversity that can be found at Ifield Mill Pond.

Days like this demonstrate that you don't always need rare wildlife to enjoy a rewarding photography session. A familiar local nature spot can produce a wonderful variety of behaviour, lighting, and photographic opportunities if you're prepared to slow down, observe, and let nature unfold in front of you.
