A Day of Coastal Bird Photography at Pagham Harbour

Welcome to my wildlife photography journal! Pagham Harbour is one of the South Coast's finest locations for birdwatching and wildlife photography, offering an ever-changing mix of resident and migratory species throughout the year. On the 6th of April 2026, I enjoyed a wonderful day exploring the harbour, with plenty of opportunities to photograph the rich variety of birdlife that makes this nature reserve such a rewarding place to visit.

Throughout the day, I photographed a diverse selection of species, each providing its own unique photographic opportunities. Carrion Crows and Mallard Ducks were a constant presence around the reserve, while Common Redshanks busily searched the shoreline for food, allowing plenty of chances to observe their natural behaviour.

There was no shortage of action either. A Cormorant powered effortlessly across the harbour, flying low over the water with its unmistakable silhouette, while flocks of Dunlin twisted and turned together in perfect synchronisation, creating spectacular displays of speed and coordination. One of the more elegant sights of the day was a Little Egret in flight, its brilliant white plumage standing out beautifully against the coastal landscape.

I was especially pleased to photograph Ringed Plovers in flight. Their small size, rapid wingbeats, and unpredictable movements make them one of the more challenging coastal birds to capture sharply, but that's part of what makes photographing them so rewarding. Successfully freezing their movement required patience, quick reactions, and plenty of persistence.

One of the things I enjoy most about visiting Pagham Harbour is the incredible variety of wildlife that can be seen in a single outing. From feeding waders to birds in flight, every corner of the reserve offers something different, making each visit a fresh experience. It's a place that continually rewards careful observation and reminds me why coastal wildlife photography is so enjoyable.
