Great Crested Grebe at Pagham Harbour – Spring Plumage on Display

Welcome to my wildlife photography journal! Every visit to Pagham Harbour offers something different, and on the 6th of April 2026 I was delighted to spend time photographing one of the UK's most elegant waterbirds. Spring is one of the best times to visit, as many species are beginning to display their breeding plumage and behaviour.

During my visit, I had the pleasure of photographing a Great Crested Grebe. These beautiful birds are always a joy to watch, but at this time of year they are particularly striking. Their distinctive chestnut and black head plumes, bright white face, and rich breeding colours make them one of the most attractive waterbirds found in the UK.

Watching the grebe glide effortlessly across the water was a reminder of just how graceful these birds are. Whether quietly drifting across the harbour or diving beneath the surface in search of fish, they move with an elegance that makes them a favourite subject for wildlife photographers. Although they're best known for their spectacular courtship displays in spring, simply observing their calm, purposeful movements is equally rewarding.

Pagham Harbour continues to be one of my favourite locations for wildlife photography, offering a wonderful variety of birds throughout the seasons. Encounters like this are what make every visit worthwhile, and it's always a privilege to spend time observing such a magnificent species in its natural habitat.
