An Unforgettable Stoat Encounter at RSPB Pulborough Brooks
Welcome to my wildlife photography journal! Every visit to RSPB Pulborough Brooks brings the possibility of an unexpected wildlife encounter, and on the 11th of April 2026, one small predator provided a morning I won't forget. While the reserve is renowned for its birdlife, it's often the mammals that create some of the most memorable photographic moments.
One of the highlights of my visit was an unforgettable encounter with a Stoat. At first, it remained hidden amongst the grass, quietly watching me with its curious eyes peering through the vegetation. It seemed just as interested in observing me as I was in photographing it, creating a fascinating moment of mutual curiosity.
A little later, the Stoat appeared once again, this time poking its head out from inside a pipe. It paused just long enough to give me an excellent opportunity to capture a series of photographs full of personality and character before disappearing just as quickly as it had arrived. Encounters like this are often over in seconds, making patience and being ready with the camera absolutely essential.
Stoats are incredibly energetic, inquisitive, and agile predators, constantly exploring their surroundings in search of food while remaining alert to potential danger. Their playful behaviour and expressive faces make them one of Britain's most captivating mammals to photograph, even though sightings are often brief and unpredictable.
Days like these are a reminder that wildlife photography is about far more than simply taking pictures. It's about spending time in nature, observing behaviour, and appreciating those fleeting moments that can never be planned. I felt incredibly fortunate to spend time with this beautiful little predator, and it was undoubtedly one of the highlights of my visit to RSPB Pulborough Brooks.
