Broad-Bodied Chaser in Flight at Warnham Local Nature Reserve

Welcome to my wildlife photography journal! A visit to Warnham Local Nature Reserve on 2nd August 2026 gave me another opportunity to photograph one of the many fascinating insects that can be found around the reserve. This time, I was concentrating on a Broad-Bodied Chaser, with the aim of capturing it in flight.

Photographing dragonflies in flight is always a challenge. They move quickly and unpredictably, changing direction without warning and making it difficult to anticipate exactly where they will be next. The Broad-Bodied Chaser was no exception, but it gave me several good opportunities as it flew around the reserve.

What I particularly enjoyed about this encounter was being able to capture the dragonfly while it was airborne, with the detail of its wings and body still visible as it moved through the air. Getting the focus right on such a small and fast-moving subject is never straightforward, so when everything comes together and you get a sharp image, it is especially satisfying.

Wildlife photography isn't always about finding a subject that stays perfectly still and makes an easy photograph. Sometimes the challenge of capturing movement is what makes the finished image more rewarding, and photographing this Broad-Bodied Chaser was a great example of that.

Another enjoyable encounter with one of Warnham Local Nature Reserve's many fascinating insects, and another reminder that there is always something interesting to look for when you take the time to explore the reserve.
