Kingfisher Photography at Warnham Local Nature Reserve – Perched, Hovering and in Flight

Welcome to my wildlife photography journal! Warnham Local Nature Reserve is a place that continues to provide incredible wildlife encounters, and on 23rd May 2026 I was fortunate enough to spend some time with one of the UK’s most spectacular birds — the Kingfisher. These vibrant and fast-moving birds are always a privilege to see, and this visit provided some fantastic opportunities to capture their behaviour and beauty.

The highlight of the day was being able to photograph this stunning bird in a variety of situations. From quiet moments perched on branches, where its incredible blue and orange colours were clearly visible, to hovering above the water while searching for prey, the Kingfisher provided a wonderful display of skill and precision. Capturing it in flight as it sped across the reserve was another memorable moment, showcasing the incredible speed and agility that makes this species so fascinating to watch.

Kingfishers are always a special sight, and observing their hunting behaviour never gets old. The way they patiently watch the water before suddenly launching into action is a perfect example of the patience and precision found in nature. Photographing these moments requires timing, patience, and a little bit of luck, which makes every successful image even more rewarding.

Days like this are a reminder of just how much incredible wildlife can be found right on our doorstep at Warnham Local Nature Reserve. Whether perched quietly, hovering above the water, or flying across the reserve, the Kingfisher remains one of the most captivating birds to encounter.
