Common Terns Fishing at Warnham Local Nature Reserve – A Display of Skill and Precision

Welcome to my wildlife photography journal! Warnham Local Nature Reserve is one of my favourite locations for observing wildlife, and every visit brings new opportunities to witness fascinating behaviour. On 5th June 2026, I spent some time watching the Common Terns as they performed their incredible fishing displays over the water.

It was fascinating to watch what appeared to be a type of catch-and-release behaviour, with the birds repeatedly catching small fish, dropping them, and then diving again to recapture their prey. Whether they were practising their hunting skills, improving their grip on slippery fish, or simply refining their technique, it provided a fantastic insight into the challenges these birds face when feeding.

Watching the Common Terns hover effortlessly before plunging into the water at incredible speed was a real reminder of just how skilled and agile they are. Their precision, timing, and ability to adjust mid-flight made for some fantastic photographic opportunities, capturing a side of their behaviour that is not always seen.

Warnham Local Nature Reserve once again proved why it is such a brilliant place for wildlife photography. With its variety of habitats and constant activity, there is always something new to discover, and sessions like this highlight the importance of taking time to observe the natural world.
