Common Terns Returning with Fish at Warnham Local Nature Reserve

Welcome to my wildlife photography journal! Warnham Local Nature Reserve is always a rewarding place to spend time with nature, and my visit on 5th June 2026 provided a fantastic opportunity to observe the skill and precision of Common Terns as they went about their daily routine.

I spent time photographing these impressive birds as they hunted over the water before returning with their catches. It was fascinating to watch them dive, search, and then return carrying surprisingly large fish, often almost as long as their heads. Seeing them fly back with such confidence while carefully holding their prey in their bills was a wonderful example of the challenges they face and the remarkable hunting ability they possess.

Capturing these moments was incredibly rewarding, as each return flight offered a brief opportunity to photograph the action. By the end of the session, I had taken 43 photographs of Common Terns carrying their catch — each image helping to tell the story of these skilled hunters and their behaviour around the reserve.

Moments like these are what make wildlife photography so enjoyable. It’s not just about capturing a bird in flight, but about recording a small part of its daily life and the incredible behaviours that often go unnoticed.
