Wildlife Action in the Wind at Warnham Local Nature Reserve

Welcome to my wildlife photography journal! Warnham Local Nature Reserve is always a rewarding place to visit, offering a wonderful variety of wildlife and opportunities to capture interesting behaviour throughout the year. My visit on 5th June 2026 was a particularly memorable one, with strong winds creating challenging conditions but also bringing plenty of activity across the reserve.

Despite the blustery weather, there were many fantastic moments to capture. Coots provided some dramatic action as they battled on the water, while a Cormorant taking off gave me the chance to photograph the power and movement involved in getting airborne. The windy conditions also created some great flight photography opportunities, including Gadwall in flight, a young Grey Heron taking to the air, a Little Egret flying across the reserve, Mallard Ducks moving together, and a flock of Tufted Ducks travelling as one.

One of the highlights of the day was watching a young Great Crested Grebe practising and strengthening its wings, along with a parent and youngster braving the waves created by the strong wind. Seeing these birds continue with their daily routines despite the challenging conditions was a great reminder of how adaptable wildlife can be.

I also captured a beautiful moment with a Mute Swan and its cygnets, a lovely scene that showed the quieter side of the reserve amongst all the action. Days like this prove that even difficult weather can create some of the most rewarding photography opportunities, with changing conditions often bringing unique behaviour and memorable images.

Warnham Local Nature Reserve once again delivered a fantastic day of wildlife photography, showing why it remains such a special location for observing and capturing the natural world.
