Coot on the Water at Ifield Mill Pond – A Quiet Moment of Preening
Welcome to my wildlife photography journal! Ifield Mill Pond is a wonderful place to slow down, observe the smaller moments in nature, and capture the everyday behaviour of the birds that call the pond home. On 26th April 2026, I spent some time photographing a Coot as it moved calmly across the water, offering a chance to capture a simple but rewarding wildlife encounter.
The Coot was completely at ease, gliding across the surface before pausing for a close head-shot while preening. Watching birds during these quieter moments is always fascinating, as even the most familiar species reveal interesting behaviours when you take the time to observe them. The careful process of tidying and maintaining its feathers showed a peaceful side to this often overlooked pond resident.
Sometimes the simplest encounters create the most memorable photographs. There was no dramatic action or rare sighting on this occasion — just a calm moment at the water’s edge, watching a bird go about its daily routine. These are the experiences that make regular visits to places like Ifield Mill Pond so rewarding.
Thanks for reading! Be sure to explore my other wildlife adventures and photography from Ifield Mill Pond and beyond. Every visit brings something new, and I look forward to sharing more moments from the field soon.
