Grey Heron Hunting for Fish at Warnham Local Nature Reserve

Welcome to my wildlife photography journal! Warnham Local Nature Reserve is a place I regularly return to, and every visit offers the chance to witness something different. On 26th April 2026, I spent some time exploring the reserve and was rewarded with a fantastic wildlife encounter — a Grey Heron actively hunting for small fish in the shallows.

The session was a perfect example of how patience can pay off in wildlife photography. The heron stood motionless for long periods, carefully watching the water and waiting for the right opportunity. Then, in an instant, it transformed from complete stillness into a fast and precise strike, using its long bill to successfully catch its prey. Watching this behaviour unfold through the viewfinder was a brilliant reminder of the skill and patience these birds possess.

Capturing moments like this is what makes spending time in nature so rewarding. It’s not just about photographing the bird itself, but about witnessing the behaviour, the strategy, and the small details that often go unnoticed. Every visit to Warnham Local Nature Reserve brings the possibility of seeing something special, and this encounter with the Grey Heron was certainly one to remember.
