Golden Evening Light at Ifield Mill Pond – A Wonderful Mix of Waterbirds

Welcome to my wildlife photography journal! Ifield Mill Pond is a beautiful location to spend time with nature, and an evening visit on 18th March 2026 provided the perfect combination of peaceful surroundings, beautiful light, and a fantastic variety of birdlife. As the sun began to set, the soft golden glow reflected across the water, creating the perfect atmosphere for wildlife photography.

As the light softened, the pond became full of activity. A Canada Goose moved calmly across the water, while nearby Coots continued with their busy routine. A Cormorant provided one of the classic sights of the evening, sitting peacefully with its wings spread wide as it caught the last warmth from the fading sunlight. A Great Crested Grebe added another special moment, drifting gracefully across the pond and perfectly reflecting the calm beauty of the evening.

One of the highlights of the session was a Grey Wagtail skimming low over the water, moving with incredible speed and precision as it hunted in the fading light. Mallards also added plenty of interest, with some captured in flight while others glided across the golden reflections on the surface of the pond. To finish the evening, a Muscovy Duck approached directly towards me, offering a wonderful close encounter and a memorable final image from the visit.

Evenings like this are a reminder of why spending time outdoors with a camera is so rewarding. The combination of beautiful light, interesting behaviour, and a great mix of species made this a truly enjoyable visit to Ifield Mill Pond.
