Great Crested Grebe and Grey Wagtail at Ifield Mill Pond

Welcome to my wildlife photography journal! Ifield Mill Pond is a wonderful local location that always has the potential to deliver interesting wildlife encounters, whether it’s from the water itself or along the surrounding edges. On 28th March 2026, I spent some time exploring the pond and came away with a lovely collection of moments from two very different but equally fascinating birds.

One of the highlights of the visit was watching a Great Crested Grebe performing one of its characteristic displays, including a sharp head shake that sent ripples spreading across the water. These small but expressive behaviours are always fascinating to observe, giving a glimpse into the personality and natural movements of these elegant waterbirds. Capturing these moments in a photograph makes the patience behind wildlife photography even more rewarding.

Later, I managed to photograph a Grey Wagtail in flight as it moved quickly across the pond area. These beautiful birds are incredibly agile, rarely staying still for long as they move along the water’s edge in search of food. Seeing the flash of colour as it passed by made for a special moment and a reminder of just how much activity can happen around even a familiar local site.

It was a simple but enjoyable session at Ifield Mill Pond, with just enough wildlife activity to make the visit worthwhile. Local locations like this continue to prove that you don’t always need to travel far to find rewarding photographic opportunities.
