Kestrel, Mallard and Northern Lapwing in Flight at RSPB Pulborough Brooks

Welcome to my wildlife photography journal! RSPB Pulborough Brooks is a fantastic location for observing a wide variety of birdlife, and my visit on 28th March 2026 provided some memorable moments watching birds take to the skies. The beauty of photographing birds in flight is that every encounter is different, with only a brief opportunity to capture the perfect moment.

One of the highlights of the day was watching a Kestrel hovering effortlessly against the breeze. Suspended almost motionless in the air, it held its position with incredible precision while scanning the ground below for potential prey. Seeing this behaviour up close is always fascinating, showcasing the remarkable control and focus these birds possess.

I also managed to capture a male Mallard in flight, with its wings fully extended as it moved across the reserve. The rich colours of its plumage were beautifully displayed, offering a different perspective of a bird that is often seen swimming rather than flying. A Northern Lapwing provided another special moment, twisting and turning through the air with its distinctive flight pattern and flashes of contrasting plumage.

Photographing birds in motion is always a challenge, requiring patience, timing, and quick reactions, but capturing those split-second moments makes the effort worthwhile. Visits like this are a reminder of how rewarding it is to spend time observing wildlife and waiting for those unexpected opportunities.
