Pied Wagtails in Flight at Ifield Mill Pond

Welcome to my wildlife photography journal! Ifield Mill Pond is a wonderful local location for observing the smaller details of nature, and even a simple visit can often reveal fascinating behaviour. On 28th March 2026, I spent some time watching Pied Wagtails as they worked around the water’s edge, providing a great opportunity to observe their energetic feeding habits.

The Pied Wagtails were constantly on the move, darting, twisting, and turning through the air with incredible precision as they chased flies low over the pond. Their agility is impressive to watch — every movement seems perfectly controlled as they react instantly to their surroundings. These small birds rarely stay still for long, making their behaviour both fascinating to observe and challenging to capture with a camera.

Photographing moments like these is all about patience and timing. Their quick movements and unpredictable flight patterns mean that every successful image feels rewarding, capturing just a brief instant of their busy lives. It’s often these quieter sessions, simply watching and understanding a species’ behaviour, that create some of the most enjoyable wildlife photography experiences.

Ifield Mill Pond continues to be a fantastic place to spend time with nature, offering opportunities to appreciate the everyday wildlife that can so easily be overlooked. Even a short visit can provide memorable encounters and a chance to capture something special.
