Great Crested Grebe in Flight at Pagham Harbour

Welcome to my wildlife photography journal! Pagham Harbour is one of those special coastal locations where every visit can bring a new and unexpected wildlife encounter. On 16th May 2026, I spent some time exploring the harbour and was treated to a fantastic sighting of a Great Crested Grebe in flight.

While these elegant birds are most commonly seen gracefully gliding across the water, watching one take to the air was a truly memorable moment. The Great Crested Grebe’s striking plumage, long neck, and powerful wingbeats were on full display as it flew across the harbour, creating a wonderful photographic opportunity.

Capturing birds in flight always brings its own challenges, requiring patience, timing, and quick reactions behind the camera. Moments like this are especially rewarding because they show a different side of familiar species and allow us to appreciate the incredible behaviour and movement of the wildlife around us.

Pagham Harbour continues to be a fantastic place for wildlife photography, offering a diverse range of habitats and species throughout the year. From waterbirds on the lagoon to coastal visitors passing through, there is always something new to discover.
