Great Crested Grebes at Ifield Mill Pond – Spring Elegance on the Water

Welcome to my wildlife photography journal! Ifield Mill Pond is always a rewarding place to visit throughout the year, but spring brings a special atmosphere as many species become more active and begin their breeding displays. On the 18th of April 2026, I spent a relaxing morning photographing one of the pond's most elegant residents – the Great Crested Grebe.

Watching these beautiful birds out on the water is always a pleasure. Their striking breeding plumage, with ornate head crests and rich chestnut ruffs, makes them one of the UK's most distinctive waterbirds. Throughout the morning, they glided effortlessly across the pond, their graceful movements reflecting perfectly in the calm spring water. It was wonderful to spend time observing their behaviour as they went about their daily routines in the soft morning light.

Great Crested Grebes are a favourite subject of mine, not only because of their beautiful appearance but also because of the fascinating behaviours they display during the breeding season. Whether they're swimming elegantly across the water, diving beneath the surface in search of fish, or interacting with their partners, they always provide fantastic opportunities for wildlife photography.

Ifield Mill Pond continues to be one of my favourite local locations, offering peaceful surroundings and the chance to photograph a wonderful variety of wildlife throughout the seasons. Visits like this are a reminder that you don't always have to travel far to enjoy memorable encounters with nature.
