Grey Heron in Breeding Plumage at Ifield Mill Pond

Welcome to my wildlife photography journal! Spring is one of the most rewarding times of year for wildlife photography, as many birds begin to display their vibrant breeding colours and behaviours. On the 18th of April 2026, I spent some time at Ifield Mill Pond, where I was treated to a wonderful encounter with a Grey Heron in full breeding condition.

The heron was showing the beautiful breeding colours that develop around its bill and eyes at this time of year, adding an extra splash of colour to an already impressive bird. It spent long periods standing patiently along the water’s edge, completely focused on the water below as it searched for its next meal. Watching its calm, deliberate movements was a reminder of just how efficient these birds are as hunters.

Later, the heron took to the air, gliding effortlessly across the pond with its broad wings fully outstretched. Seeing such a large bird in flight is always an impressive sight, and photographing both its patient hunting behaviour and graceful flight made this encounter particularly memorable. The soft spring light helped to reveal the subtle colours and fine feather detail that make Grey Herons especially striking during the breeding season.

Ifield Mill Pond continues to be one of my favourite local locations for wildlife photography, offering a variety of species throughout the year and regular opportunities to observe natural behaviour at close range. Visits like this are a reminder that even familiar locations can produce memorable moments when the conditions are just right.
