Grey Heron Mobbed by a Gull at Warnham Local Nature Reserve

Welcome to my wildlife photography journal! Warnham Local Nature Reserve is a place I regularly visit, and every trip can reveal something different about the behaviour and interactions of the species that call it home. On 10th May 2026, I spent time observing the wildlife around the reserve and was treated to a fascinating example of natural behaviour between two very different birds.

A Grey Heron was standing quietly when suddenly it became the focus of attention from a gull. What followed was a brief but intense display of aerial aggression, with the gull repeatedly diving towards the heron in an attempt to drive it away from the area. The heron, however, remained remarkably calm and composed, barely moving and only reacting when necessary as the gull continued its attack.

Encounters like this are a great reminder that wildlife behaviour is not always about dramatic hunting scenes or rare sightings. Everyday interactions, such as competition for space and dominance between species, offer a valuable insight into the relationships and hierarchy that exist within even familiar habitats.

Warnham Local Nature Reserve continues to provide countless opportunities to witness these small but meaningful moments in nature. It is often the unexpected encounters that reveal the most about the animals we observe and photograph.
