Kingfisher Diving Sequence at Warnham Local Nature Reserve

Welcome to my wildlife photography journal! A visit to Warnham Local Nature Reserve on 2nd August 2026 gave me a fantastic opportunity to photograph one of my favourite birds, a Kingfisher, as it carried out a rapid fishing dive. These moments can be over almost as quickly as they begin, so being ready for the action is essential.

The Kingfisher started from its perch before diving towards the water, hitting the surface and disappearing beneath it. Just moments later, it emerged again and returned to the same perch. Watching the sequence unfold was fascinating, but capturing the different stages with the camera was a real challenge.

The dive happens incredibly quickly, giving very little time to react. Keeping the Kingfisher in the frame throughout the sequence meant concentrating on its movement and being ready for the moment it left the perch. Tracking the bird as it headed towards the water, disappeared beneath the surface and then emerged again really tested both timing and concentration.

What I particularly enjoyed about this sequence was being able to capture the different stages of the dive. From the moment the Kingfisher left its perch, through hitting the water and disappearing beneath the surface, to its return to the same perch, the photographs give a real sense of just how fast and precise these little birds are when fishing.

It’s sequences like this that make photographing Kingfishers so rewarding. You never quite know when they are going to dive, and once they do, everything happens in an instant. Being prepared and staying focused can make the difference between simply watching the action and capturing it as a series of photographs.
