Kingfisher Having a Full-Body Shake at Warnham Local Nature Reserve

Welcome to my wildlife photography journal! A visit to Warnham Local Nature Reserve on 2nd August 2026 gave me another opportunity to spend some time watching and photographing one of my favourite birds, the Kingfisher. As always with wildlife photography, it was the unexpected moments that made the visit particularly enjoyable.

While watching the Kingfisher perched up, it suddenly launched into a full-body shake. It was one of those brief little moments that can easily be missed if you're not paying attention and ready with the camera. The bird stayed on the perch just long enough for me to capture the movement, with its feathers spreading out as it shook, creating some lovely detail and movement in the image.

These moments are one of the reasons I enjoy spending so much time watching wildlife. You never quite know what is going to happen next, and while you might be waiting for the perfect pose, something completely different can happen in an instant. Being patient and keeping the camera ready can make all the difference when those unexpected opportunities appear.

Photographing Kingfishers can be particularly rewarding because so much of the time is spent watching and waiting. When the bird suddenly does something like this, the preparation and patience can pay off with an image that captures not just the bird, but a little bit of its natural behaviour.

Another enjoyable session at Warnham Local Nature Reserve, and another reminder that some of the best wildlife photographs can come from simply being there, watching carefully, and being ready for whatever happens next.
