Kingfisher in Flight at Warnham Local Nature Reserve

Welcome to my wildlife photography journal! Warnham Local Nature Reserve is one of my favourite locations for capturing the incredible wildlife that calls the reserve home. On 18th July 2026, I spent some time focusing on one of the reserve’s most captivating residents — the Kingfisher — and trying to capture something a little different from the usual perched portrait.

Rather than waiting for a classic image of a Kingfisher sitting on a branch, I concentrated on photographing this stunning bird in flight as it moved across the water. From low passes over the lake to rapid changes of direction between different perches, every flight offered a new challenge and a chance to capture its speed, colour, and incredible agility.

Kingfishers are one of the most exciting birds to photograph, but they are certainly not an easy subject. Their speed, sudden movements, and unpredictable flight paths make tracking them through the viewfinder a real test of patience and timing. However, that challenge is exactly what makes the experience so rewarding when everything comes together.

It’s always a great feeling when patience, persistence, and a little bit of luck combine to create a series of images that truly showcase the beauty and character of these remarkable birds. Moments like this are why I keep returning to Warnham Local Nature Reserve, knowing that every visit can bring another unforgettable wildlife encounter.
