Kingfisher in Flight and Spring Wildlife Action at Warnham Local Nature Reserve

Welcome to my wildlife photography journal! Warnham Local Nature Reserve is one of my favourite locations for capturing the changing seasons and the incredible variety of wildlife that can be found throughout the year. On 10th May 2026, I spent some time exploring the reserve and was treated to a brilliant session filled with close encounters, fascinating behaviour, and plenty of fast-moving action.

One of the highlights of the visit was an incredible encounter with a Kingfisher in flight. Carrying a fish, it flew in close and came directly towards me, creating one of those unforgettable wildlife moments that are both exciting to witness and challenging to capture. Moments like this are what make wildlife photography so rewarding — being in the right place at the right time and being ready when nature provides an opportunity.

Nearby, a Grey Heron was slowly making its way through the water, wading waist-deep as it searched for food. Watching its deliberate movements and patience provided a complete contrast to the speed and energy of the Kingfisher encounter.

The smaller birds also provided plenty of action, with a Pied Wagtail constantly darting and twisting through the air as it caught insects in flight. Above the water, Swallows and Swifts added to the atmosphere, cutting through the sky with their incredible speed and agility as they hunted on the wing.

To finish the session, a Coot with chicks moved carefully across the water, creating a much calmer and more peaceful moment after the excitement of the earlier aerial activity. It was a wonderful reminder of the variety of wildlife behaviour that can be experienced during a single visit.

Warnham Local Nature Reserve once again delivered a fantastic day of wildlife photography, with a brilliant mix of species, behaviour, and memorable encounters all in one location.
