Kingfisher in Low Hover at Warnham Local Nature Reserve

Welcome to my wildlife photography journal! Warnham Local Nature Reserve is always capable of producing some fantastic wildlife moments, and my visit on 1st August 2026 gave me the opportunity to photograph a Kingfisher displaying some fascinating behaviour just before diving into the water.

I watched as the Kingfisher came down into a low hover above the water, holding itself almost motionless for that brief moment before committing to its dive. It was a fantastic behaviour to witness, and one that gave me a great opportunity to capture the bird at a point where it was preparing for what came next.

These moments happen incredibly quickly, so being ready and tracking the bird as it came down was essential. With the Kingfisher moving from its perch towards the water, there was only a very short window in which to react and capture the hover before the dive began.

It’s these brief moments of behaviour that make wildlife photography so rewarding. Rather than simply capturing a bird perched quietly, being able to photograph the sequence leading up to a dive gives the image a little more story and shows what was happening in front of the camera.

Another enjoyable session at Warnham Local Nature Reserve, and a lovely opportunity to capture one of the reserve’s most beautiful birds displaying this fascinating behaviour.
