Kingfisher Sequence at Warnham Local Nature Reserve

Welcome to my wildlife photography journal! A visit to Warnham Local Nature Reserve on 1st August 2026 gave me a great opportunity to spend some time photographing one of my favourite subjects, the Kingfisher. The light and conditions provided a good opportunity to concentrate on capturing behaviour rather than simply waiting for a single portrait.

I managed to capture a nice sequence of behaviour, starting with the Kingfisher perched quietly before it suddenly launched itself into the water. These moments can happen incredibly quickly, so being ready and keeping the bird in the viewfinder is essential. I was then able to follow it as it returned to the perch, giving me the chance to photograph several different stages of the sequence.

Kingfishers are always a fantastic subject to photograph, but capturing more than just the bird sitting on its perch adds another level of excitement. Seeing the transition from the quiet moment before the dive, through the action of entering the water and then returning to the perch, gives a much better impression of the behaviour and movement involved.

It certainly keeps you on your toes and ready for that next movement. With a Kingfisher, you never quite know exactly when the next dive is going to happen, so having the camera ready and being able to react quickly can make all the difference.

Another enjoyable session at Warnham Local Nature Reserve, with some great Kingfisher moments captured. It’s sessions like this that make returning to the reserve so rewarding, as there is always another opportunity to photograph familiar wildlife in a different way.
